Artichoke "Globe" (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus)
This perennial vegetable is our logo for a reason! Spectacular foliage, flower, and fruit. Plants have jagged green leaves and thistle-like flowers. The edible vegetable is the large unopened flower bud which contains an edible heart. Vegetables are traditionally expensive to purchase at the supermarket.
Semi-perennial "Globe" variety will last about 5 years. Cold hardy, good to mulch in late Fall.
Sun: Full sun.
Soil: Light, fertile, well-drained soil.
Water: Artichokes need plenty of water to produce those big buds. You may need to water up to three times a week during a hot, dry spell, especially if it occurs while the buds are forming.
Height/Spread: 3 to 5 feet high. Requires 4x4' spacing.
Zones: 7 to 10
Potential Pests: Watch for crown mold, grey rot, armyworms, artichoke aphids, artichoke plume moths, flea beetles, loopers, and spider mites.
