Artichoke "Globe" (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus)

Artichoke "Globe" (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus)

from $4.00

This perennial vegetable is our logo for a reason!  Spectacular foliage, flower, and fruit.  Plants have jagged green leaves and thistle-like flowers.  The edible vegetable is the large unopened flower bud which contains an edible heart.  Vegetables are traditionally expensive to purchase at the supermarket.

Semi-perennial "Globe" variety will last about 5 years. Cold hardy, good to mulch in late Fall.

Sun:  Full sun.

Soil: Light, fertile, well-drained soil.

Water:  Artichokes need plenty of water to produce those big buds. You may need to water up to three times a week during a hot, dry spell, especially if it occurs while the buds are forming.

Height/Spread:  3 to 5 feet high. Requires 4x4' spacing.

Zones:  7 to 10

Potential Pests: Watch for crown mold, grey rot, armyworms, artichoke aphids, artichoke plume moths, flea beetles, loopers, and spider mites.
